Safety and security

Trust and transparency is integral to our marketplace - our dedicated security teams helps ensure our customers and consumers know how to buy and sell online with confidence

Buying and selling safely

Buying or selling a car should be a pleasant and hassle-free experience‚ and at Auto Trader we do everything we can to make sure that's the case. As the UK’s leading digital automotive marketplace, we recognise that buying or selling a vehicle online can be complicated.

Our Safety and Security Centre offers tips, checklists and advice to help car buyers and car owners stay safe when using our platform.

To ensure consumers only see genuine adverts, we have a dedicated customer security team, working seven days a week, who monitor our site to identify adverts that are potentially fraudulent or misleading in price or mileage. We also have an online Safety and Security area on our platform which offers tips, checklists and advice to help car buyers and car owners stay safe when buying and selling vehicles. Over 10 years ago, we founded an industry forum, the Vehicle Safe Trading Advisory Group ('VSTAG'). VSTAG brings the UK’s leading online automotive advertising companies together with advisors from the Metropolitan Police, Get Safe Online and Action Fraud to work together to reduce online vehicle crime and help protect buyers and sellers of pre-owned vehicles from fraud.

Cyber security

To mitigate the risk of cyber crimes we continuously monitor the availability and resilience of our platform and systems, as well as investing in security infrastructure to ensure they remain robust. We employ dedicated security teams and carry out regular penetration testing and reviews of threats and vulnerabilities. We have two-factor verification in place to access our network, providing enhanced authentication. We have been PCI DSS (payment card industry data security standard) compliant since 2013 and use an external Quality Security Assessor to maintain best practice.

We have a rigorous data breach process in the unlikely event one occurs. This includes reporting notifiable breaches to the relevant regulatory authorities, including the ICO and FCA, without undue delay and within stipulated deadlines. Where required we take corrective action as soon as possible.

Protecting consumer and customer data

Protecting the data of our consumers and our retailer customers is also an important focus for us. We have completed a comprehensive programme of work to ensure the organisation (both in the UK and Ireland) complies with the General Data Protection Regulation.

We are a data-led business, and when it comes to collecting and storing personal data, be that for consumers, customers or our employees, we abide by a clear set of principles. We are committed to ensuring that the personal information we collect, and use is appropriate for the purpose and does not constitute an invasion of privacy. Where appropriate, Auto Trader obtains consent from consumers to gather personal data to service their enquiries for products, services or vehicles advertised on the site. Explicit consent is also obtainedto contact consumers for marketing purposes. We may pass personal data to third-party service providers contracted to Auto Trader in the course of dealing with customers or employees. We carefully vet any third parties that we share data with, and they are obliged to keep it securely, and to use it only to fulfil the service they provide on our behalf.

Thanks to @ClarkRjoclark & @johnfohanlon1 for a fascinating interview. Great to hear such optimism for our industry!
Pre-#COVID19 - John believes their web presence wasn’t geared to help facilitate remote sales but, as a result of the pandemic, they have focussed on enabling more of the car buying journey to take place online - something they will continue to do into the future
John expects a slight softening in the next 2-3 weeks but this will be due to holiday season so no reason to panic – key is to focus on the quarters performance which has been incredibly strong for @WaylandsVolvo
We've been looking forward to this! @ClarkRjoclark has just started our interview with @johnfohanlon1 - sure to be some great insights here https://t.co/3IfhnCO5D4
